Start by identifying where you are playing
Browser permission applies to the optional browser demo
Toon Tone links an optional third-party browser demo from the main guide. A browser can block its microphone before the page loads a recorder, so inspect the site permission beside the address bar, allow the microphone, then reload. That check is relevant to a web demo, not proof that the official downloadable game has the same audio path.
The official game uses its own desktop route
The publisher's current listing is the source of truth for the downloadable game and release notes. For that route, verify the operating system's microphone privacy permission and test the physical device outside the game first. This stops a browser setting from being mistaken for a Windows or Linux input failure.
Choose one known-working input device
Reduce the list before you diagnose it
Webcams, Bluetooth headsets, capture cards, controller mics, virtual cables, and monitor microphones can all appear as inputs. Select one microphone you can hear in a simple recorder, then temporarily disconnect or disable the rest. A single direct device gives you a useful baseline; a long device list makes it difficult to tell which input the game selected.
Test the signal before opening a round
Speak into the chosen mic in a recording or system input meter. If the level does not move there, changing game menus will not solve the problem. If it works there but not in the game, note the device name, current build, and whether the failure appears before recording, during recording, or at playback. Those details are much more useful than a general report that the mic “does not work.”
Stereo, surround sound, and virtual audio routes
Keep the first test path simple
The publisher says the widely reported recording problem may be related to surround-sound audio setups and describes it as unresolved at the engine level. Surround utilities, virtual mixers, loopback channels, and Bluetooth profile switching can also create several near-identical inputs. They are not automatically the cause, but they add routing layers that make a microphone failure harder to reproduce. For a first test, use a direct headset or USB microphone path and avoid changing multiple audio enhancements at once.
Do not describe an unverified routing change as a fix
The developer has published a microphone test-build path, but that does not establish one universal stereo or surround-sound fix. If a virtual device is involved, compare the same round with it disabled and with one ordinary input selected. Record what changed: no input, distorted input, delayed input, or a recording that ends early. That is a reproducible observation rather than a guess about the cause.
When recording stops during a round
Check whether another app took the microphone
Close communication apps, browser tabs, recording tools, and overlays that may acquire the microphone. Also check for a headset reconnect, a muted hardware switch, or an operating-system privacy prompt that appeared behind the game. Re-test one short round after each change so the result stays interpretable.
Capture a small reproduction note
Write down the build version, platform, selected input, whether the issue occurs every round, and the exact moment it happens. For example: “Windows, USB headset selected, signal works in Recorder, recording ends after a few seconds in the second round.” This is the minimum useful context if you later consult the developer's notes or report the issue.
Remove playback echo before judging the recording
Headphones are the cleanest test
Use headphones or a headset during the first successful recording. Speakers can feed the sample audio back into the microphone, which makes your take sound muddy and can create feedback. Lower speaker output, keep the microphone away from the output source, and do not use a room test with several voices or other audio playing.
Separate echo from microphone quality
Echo or feedbackYou hear the game or your voice returning through the speakers. Test with headphones and lower output volume.
Weak inputThe meter barely moves in every app. Check the physical mic, cable, distance, and system input gain.
Wrong deviceAnother device records, but the selected input is silent. Simplify the device list and retest.
Use the official microphone test build carefully
It is a test route, not a guaranteed repair
The developer published a devlog for a 0.5.2-dev2 microphone test build. The post presents it as a possible fix to test, not as a promise that every microphone, driver, operating system, or surround setup is resolved. Use the official microphone test-build devlog for its current instructions.
What to compare
Keep the device and test clip the same. Compare the normal build and the test build only after permissions, device selection, and echo are controlled. If the result differs, report the exact behavior rather than calling it fixed. If it does not differ, return to the official listing or devlog with the reproduction note you collected.
